GLASS BODY 03 is one iteration of many within an evolving research project which explores self-forming processes of viscous materials in dynamic molds. Titled “Body Series”, the project reflects how object bodies of different mass and material are results of a set of forces, not different from our own bodies. The act of design becomes the conception of conditions under which the bodies are shaped.

The outcome of this specific process which uses the artisanal tradition of glass blowing is a pendant luminaire. Its form results from the interplay between the viscosity of glass and the constraints of the specifically developed flexible mold. Once a boundary, the cable remains in the final product as the structure for suspending the glass from the ceiling. It holds the body along the grooves between its bulges, their precise position determined by the specifically designed field of forces at play – the tensile force of the cable, the viscosity of the heated glass, the air pressure generated by the body of the glass blower and finally the gravitational force all our bodies are subject under.

The form becomes the result of a natural process within the framework conceived and of the moment the designer has decided to freeze the process in time. It is an expression of the tension between the seemingly “immaterial” transparency of glass, only perceivable through the refraction and reflection of light, and its actual body of mass and weight, made visible through the tensile structure which anchors the Glass Body to the architectural space. As all the different iterations of the “Body Series”, “Glass Body 03” is also the fruit and document of the successful collaboration between the designer and the artisan.
